Is one of the most iconic places of the Delta de l’Ebre, a space with spectacular views where the main tourist resource is the Torre de Sant Joan dels Alfacs or Bolitx.
This is the construction of an old defence tower located in the town of Poblenou del Delta (Amposta) and is located on the southern coast of the Delta de l’Ebre, on the edge of the Encanyissada. The Torre de Sant Joan was built in 1576 by royal mandate of Felip II in order to monitor and strengthen the defense of the attacks of the Saracen pirate in the port dels Alfacs.
Due to the movements of the lands of the Delta de l’Ebre, currently the tower is located about 50 m into the sea around a shallow area within the bay dels Alfacs, in the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre. Therefore, the conservation status of the tower is quite poor and the debris of its structure measures about 6 m in height. However, as a whole, it is a historic site surrounded by rice fields in the Delta de l’Ebre.
Currently, it can only be accessed on certain occasions by an embankment of loose stones flooded from the Poblenou del Delta. It is one of the most photographed spots in the Ebro Delta due to the colonies of flamingos that live throughout the year and the spectacular sunsets that are experienced during the year.
