Description of the visit

The GEPEC guides will give us an ecological and sustainable view of one of the most sensitive points in the Delta de l’Ebre, the Ullals de Baltasar. In this way, you will be able to identify the trees that surround us and the songs of the birds that fly over us. This activity will begin in the car park of Ullals de Baltasar, from 10:00 to 12:00.

The Ullals

The Ullals of Baltasar are a point of upwelling of underground water, organized from the rain that falls in the mountains of Montsià, Massif de los Puertos and Serra del Boix-Cardó. When the aquifer from these mountains reaches the area of the Delta de l’Ebre, it encounters the clay and impermeable materials of the sediments and creates these pools of circular or eye shape, from where it gets the name. Since 2009, the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre has acquired the estate of the Ullals de Baltasar and, you can count on 50 formations of different diameters with depths ranging from 0.5 to 9 m.

The Embut

Recently declared a natural wildlife area, it is located in an area where years ago there were rice fields, now converted into a wild environment. At this point we find a viewpoint, next to which is a wooden box that serves as a nest for bats, the largest in Europe. The Ebro Delta is one of the most important breeding areas for these chiroptera, as the animal takes advantage of the summer to eat a lot and spend the winter in caves or cool places. Bats feed on all kinds of insects, especially mosquitoes, acting as biological controllers of these pests, as they are able to eat between 500 and 1,000 mosquitoes a day.

The tower of Sant Joan is the construction of an old defence tower located in the town of Poblenou del Delta and is located on the southern coast of the Delta de l’Ebre, on the edge of the Encanyissada. The Tower of Sant Joan was built in 1576 under the royal mandate of Philip II in order to monitor and strengthen the defense of the attacks of the pirate “Sarraina” in the port of the Alfacs. Due to the movements of the lands of the Delta de l’Ebre, currently the tower is located about 50 meters into the sea around a shallow area within the bay dels Alfacs, in the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre.
