The Delta is of international importance because of 8 species of plants and 69 vertebrate fauna, most of wich are birds. Its value to bird life is evident both in its role as a area for wintering or stopping over during migratory periods.
In terms of the diversity of its bird life, suffice it to say that, of the 600 species if birds that exist in Europe, almost 325 have been spotted in the Delta Ebro. These bird, omnipresent inhabitants of the Delta, are the main reason for the international prestige enjoyed by this 7.802 ha. National Park. In the colder months over 300.000 birds regulary use the Delta as their winter quarters, mainly gulls and ducks. In the spring and summer 27.000 pairs of over a hundred different species lay their eggs int the Park's different nesting colonies.
Description
In Amposta, take the Avinguda de Sant Jaume at the Amposta Tourist Office towards the Amposta beaches. As you leave thje town, take the Charles III Navigatioon Canal road, cross the canal to the right of the River Ebro and, before water reaching the La Cambra petrol station, continue to the left. Then take La Senyora track off to the right. This runs parallel to the Navigation Canal and offers an enjoyable walk throught the vegetable and rice fields that delimit the delta and continental zones, with view of the majestic Montsià range. A surprisingly big eucalyptus tree marks the point where you need to take the Lorente livestock track to the right. This was one used by livestock that went from the delta region to pasture on the range an vice-versa. The next path that crosses this track leads to the springs area. The blacknees of the earth is due to the fact that is peat, product of the descomposition caused when the old lagoons disappeared. The path crosses irrigation channels and canals of clear water bubbling from the springs, this producing exuberant vegetation, while the sheltering clumps of reeds were once refuges for otters that have now dissappeared. At the next fork, cross the canal an you will immediately see the first of the springs, covered with wild water- lilies. The next spring is circled by huge eucalyptus that contain it within their mysterious root structures. These springs are of fresh, subterranean comming from ELs Ports and Montsia ranges, rising to the surface when it reaches the impermeable clay soil of the delta region.
